I wouldn't count on it, unless you leave the garage heat on all the time. When heating by just ambient air, you need a few hours of heat to warm up the mass of your engine/fluids. A heater in direct contact with the fluids/engine will do it much faster (i.e. an engine block heater)

It depends on what you are planning to do with your tractor, and what type of tractor you have. For a lot of jobs, it's the traction that is the limiting factor on a compact tractor, rather than the HP. For others, the extra HP doesn't help without a larger tractor or extra ballast (for example, if your tractor doesn't weigh enough and/or isn't physically large enough to handle the next size larger brush hog, simply having a slightly larger engine isn't going to help much).

If you plan to run some power-hungry PTO implements, or if you have the weight/traction to handle that larger box blade, then the extra HP may be worth it.

Fill us in with some more info on the types of tractors you are considering and your main intended uses, and we may be able to help more.

I have the same problem with my TC33D. It often (maybe always? I can't remember) won't start in the neutral between 1 & 2, but starts every time in the "rearmost" neutral (between 1 & 3). I keep forgetting to ask the dealer about this. It was just in for it's 50 hr maintenance... I should have asked them to look it over at the time. I'll be interested to hear what kind of responses you get.

Can anyone tell me what a good price for a new NH 757C backhoe is? I'm debating a purchase, but not sure if I can justify it at this point. I like their hoe since it's a subframe mount, and it will go on and off my TC-33D without removing any of the 3PH parts.

I spoke to the patent-holder of Rim Guard a few weeks ago. He said that the stuff still flows well enough below -20F that tires can still be serviced at this temperature (they can still pump it at that temperature). He not sure how much further below that temp it will flow, since they haven't tried it yet. Hope that's at least a partial answer to your "cold weather consistency" question.

New Holland has 2 options for the front "suitcase" weights. I had the lighter ones: 2 weights @ 57# each = 114# total. I did NOT have my front tires filled. (Dealer was very reluctant to do it, said it puts more stress on the front axle or something... I guess since the liquid does not help absorb shock like air filled does). This was barely enough. I lost a bit of steering traction at times, but never lifted the front end.

Per the owner's manual, the other NH Suitcase weight option is for 2 weights @ 100# each. This would probably be a real pain to get on and off, IMO.

SOB: a thought for you... I don't know how much Supersteer costs, but if you don't need it, you can get the same tractor (with FEL) NEW for about the same price as this used one is running you, or a few hundred dollars more. I was quoted $16,900 by one dealer, was not able to get my local dealer down that low, but went with him anyway ($17,500 for TC33D w/7308 FEL and engine block heater)

Can't help you with the dealer cost. I live in Vermont, and the best price I found for a TC33D w/7308 loader and 60" HD bucket + engine block heater was $16,900 from Bechard Equip in Champlaign NY. I ended up paying a bit more from a local dealer with an excellent reputation for service. He had originally quoted $18,235 and I got him down to $17,500.

Well, I just got off the phone with the inventor and patent-holder of Rimm Guard. There is no alcohol in it. Nothing hazardous for anyone handling it or repairing tires, non-flammable. In fact, he has an animal food-grade certification on the product (so you don't kill Fido or any livestock when you spring a leak). Sounds like a winner. The only real warning he had about it is that it should NOT be mixed with Calcium Chloride. If you are replacing the chloride fill in th etires, they should be rinsed out first.

He's sending me a couple of brochures on it, and I'll be leaning on my NH dealer to start offering it as an option.

A couple of months ago, I was quoted $18,235 for a TC33D with 7308 Loader (w/HD bucket) R4 tires and engine heater. I was able to get him down to $17,500. This was still $500 higher than I was quoted by a dealer a few hours away, but I went with it anyway, since the local guy had a good reputation for service & support. (I actually ended up spending $250 more for a Woods 1012 Loader for the extra weight capacity and significanly larger rollback and dump angles on the bucket). I also got a Woods BB60 (5 ft) brush mower for $950, and later purchased a Woods BG72 (6 ft) Box Scraper for $595.

I believe the price you were quoted for the tractor and FEL were pretty good. If you can't talk him down any further, you might take another tack and see what freebies you can get thrown in (extra lighting, if you plan to work at night? Toothbar for the bucket? Any extra hydraulic hookups needed in your future?)

I see you are going with a 4 ft brush hog. I went with the 5 ft, and the TC33D handles it with no problem (3+ ft high heavy weeds, 1" brush and occasionally larger). Glad I got the extra 1 foot... I have too much to mow as it is.

The small town where I live in Vermont uses a Bobcat with either a snowblower or a small plow to clear the sidewalks. The setup matches the width of the sidewalk. Seems to work pretty well.

I went through the same debate you are going through. I ended up with a TC33D. I was quoted a $1000 difference. The main difference is that the 33D has a Hydrostatic transmission (that alone often adds about $1000 over a gear transmission for many brands). Also standard features include:

folding ROPS ($130 option on standard model)

deluxe seat (better suspension of the seat, more adjustable, swivels 20û left or right... usefull when using a rear implement).

deluxe 3 pt hitch w/telescoping lower arms and stabilizers (makes hooking up 3 pt implements much easier) -- $165 option on standard model

Tilt and telescope on the steering wheel

"Wrap-around" headlights (more illumination to the sides than standard)

Larger hydraulic pumps on both steering and implement pump

Faster max forward speed on the "D" (12.8 vs 14.3 MPH)

Supersteer is only available on the "D" models (not that I chose this option)

I don't know whether any of these extras are worth anything to you. The hydro is nice if you are doing a lot of loader work. You can zip in and out of the pile with ease. It's also nice if others will be operating the tractor who are not so familiar with it (this was a factor in my decision... my wife will also be using it, and does not want to deal with all the various shift knobs). Some of the others are just "gimme's", but in my opinion the ROPS, deluxe hitch, and the seat were big plusses. I didn't even know abpout the extra hydrualic pump capacity when I bought it, but I suppose it could come in handy for some implements.

Test drove a couple of Agco ST series tractors. They seemed very solidly built, but I did not find the layout of the controls very comfortable. I forget which transmission type it was (shuttle, or power-shuttle ??), but I found reaching the floor mounted throttle to be uncomfortable... some other lever or guard was pressing sideways on my knee. I felt it would really bug me after a while. Other items were similar, but more minor. I ended up going for a New Holland TC33D.

A couple of months ago I was quoted $13980 for a TC29D with Ag tires by a dealer in Vermont. R4's were $240 extra.I ended up buying a TC33D with a FEL and got him to knock $700 off the initial asking price, so I'm betting there was at least a few hundred $$ of wiggle room in his price for the 29D as well.

My 33D has handled a 5 ft brush mower with no problems (cutting mostly very heavy grass/weeds and up to 1"+ brush/saplings at times). I'm sure the 29D would have no problem as well. Sorry, I can't help on the HP for a 1520.

Anthony- Your post brings up a question I had: I ordered my TC33D with filled tires. They haven't been filled yet... it will be done when my loader finally shows up. I was curious, however... the dealer says they never fill front tires, just back ones. That was news to me. What comments do others have on this? I will sometimes need to mow trails with the loader off for maneuverability. The small suitcase weights I have seem a bit light to balance my 500# Woods brush mower. Should I insist on filling the front tires as well, or does this have some adverse effect on the front end?

I recently bought a New Holland TC33D (33HP w/ HST, R4 tires). I'm considering buying a box scraper to maintain a dirt road and driveway. The road is hard packed dirt/clay/fist-sized rocks ... ruts are getting too deep in spots, and the crown too high. I also will be leveling some rough spots in a large meadow (formerly a pasture, now mostly grass, weeds, and rocks). <br> <br>Any recommendations what size I should be looking at? How useful/necessary is a hydraulic top link for this type of work?<br>

I believe you are suffering from what is known as DPS (Dog-Poop Syndrome). Do you remember back when you were a little kid and got a brand new pair of sneakers? No matter how careful you were you always stepped in some the first day you wore them. After that initial christening, you could probably wear them until you out grew them or wore them out and never have it happen again.

The latest installment in my many questions as I shop for a compact FWD: I've found a used Cub Cadet 7360 for sale. 56 hours, shuttle shift with a 590-485 cub loader. Can anyone comment on the reliability of these tractors and/or give me any idea of a fair price? It looks good visually, but I haven't driven it yet.<br>

TomG: Wouldn't he actually have to be in the act of turning the wheel for the power steering to draw on the pump? I would think that the tractor being in a steady turn, the PS would not be drawing anything. I thought it only drew while actually moving the wheels, and stopped drawing (or drew almost nothing) once the front wheels were in their new position. But, perhaps my understanding of how PS works is all wet.

Peters: you mentioned that some Rotary Mowers have a small stump jumping ring (or none at all). How big is appropriate for a medium duty 5 ft mower? I haven't looked underneath the Woods yet.
